Mac started off as "McNugget", before being refined to just "Mac" later. Or as Nick referred to him once in a sketch book "Magnus Pike Hen"- a reference to a popular, eccentric, British TV scientist. He's the brains of the outfit, the engineer, Mac is to Ginger as Scotty is to Captain Kirk.
